Naming Gladness and Gratitude
This is the day that the Lord has made, We will rejoice and be glad in it.
Growing up, my mom would always say to me that my attitude was a choice. As an angst-filled teenager I didn’t believe her. I thought that life just happened to me and all I could do was try to survive it. As an adult, I have come to understand that though much of life is not within my control, my attitude is. My choice to rejoice and be glad in each day as a gift from the Lord is within my control.
A year ago my fiancee Nicole and I started a practice of naming our gladness and gratitude. We call it “our thing.” Each night we take turns naming what we are glad for from that day. We share our gladness with one another and in doing so we rejoice in the day that has just happened.
Some days it is easy to name what we are glad for. Nicole will talk about a great day training with her Army unit, a particularly fulfilling crossfit workout, an awesome lunch with friends. I will talk about a perfect 90s music marathon on the radio, a meaningful ministry moment, a great walk with the dogs.
Other days naming our gladness is not so easy. During periods of depression or grief sometimes the only gladness we can name is that we have a home or that we have food to eat. Some days it is a challenge to name more than one or two basic things that we are glad for. However, even on those days, the Lord is with us and we can choose, if even for the briefest of moments, to direct some gratitude to God.
