The Rev. Dr. Sarah Sarchet Butter was called to serve Wellesley Village Church (Congregational, United Church of Christ) as Sr. Pastor in 2015. Prior pastorates include Sr. Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmette on Chicago’s Northshore, Associate Pastor for Stewardship & Development at Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago , and Associate Pastor for Youth and Mission at Mount Washington Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati. She has served in ministry continuously since her ordination in 1992 to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in the PC(USA). She now holds dual standing in the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ.
Sarah holds a BS from Alma College, an M.Div from Princeton Theological Seminary, an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and a D. Min from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Her thesis work on “Stewardship: An Epiphany” created a ground-breaking paradigm shift for congregational stewardship. She has a passionate commitment to developing leadership education opportunities for clergy as a critical expression of practical theology.
Sarah joyfully embraces life in community. Her favorite times are spent nurturing family and entertaining friends. Sarah is married to John Butter, MD, who practices General Internal Medicine at Beth-Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston. Together they are grateful parents to two teen-age daughters, Elizabeth and Caroline and host-parent to Shaffaf Tariq, a Wellesley ABC student. The Butter family enjoys skiing, the performing arts, and travel to explore the landscapes, cultures and customs of the world. A native of the Midwest and a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, Sarah is now discovering the treasures of New England.
She cherishes conversations about vocational discernment, church vitality, and the practice of Christian faith in the world God made and loves. Her favorite prayer is, “God, give me eyes to see you and ears to hear you, and please be obvious.”
