Breathe Deep

Reflection by David Secor

And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be Still!” And the wind ceased and there was great calm.  He said to them, “Why are you afraid?  Have you no faith?  And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?”

I love the ocean. Its mysterious beauty, its purity, and even its unpredictability. One minute turbulent and the next completely flat like a sheet of glass.  I could spend an entire day at the beach or on a boat – anticipating the next visit with my friend, the sea.  This is a place where I find peace and quiet contemplation, no matter what could be happening around me, calmness instills.  God fills my heart.

There are times in our lives where there are misunderstandings and we lose patience.  We have a challenging day and find it difficult to deal even with the ones we hold most closely.  Do you have a special place that brings you peace?  How often to you think about your place and try to imagine yourself in that peaceful state of being?

God wants us to take deep breaths, to not be afraid, to find our place of kindness and compassion.  Knowing God’s presence strengthens us in times of weakness of faith and handling of fear.

Prayer: God, teach us to take quiet moments out of each day to nurture the good you have brought into our busy lives and to bring about a greater faith in our love for you.  Amen.
