Finding God in Ecuador
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”
Last month, a group of 14 Wellesley Village Church folks traveled on a mission trip to Ecuador. Together, they found God in their experiences with the children and caretakers at For His Children orphanage:
"I experienced God in the kids of the Village Church and in the children of Ecuador, during my service with For His Children.
As soon as we arrived at the orphanage in Latacunga, the Village Church children jumped in with open hearts and big smiles. They were the first of us to form bonds with the Ecuadorian children, courageous with trying out their Spanish, and full of games, ideas and beautiful energy. Whenever I was unsure of what to do or how to respond, I would observe the kids and know. They guided me every step of the way.
I experienced God through the Ecuadorian children because, without a single word of English and for some, without the ability to speak a single word at all, they told us exactly what they needed from us. They would crawl into a lap, or take a hand, and show us how we could be there for them.
The children - the 7 from Village Church and the 50+ across the two orphanages , were a heavenly and God-blessed expereiece for me, and really defined my service at For his Children.-" Deb Berger
"I saw God in the children at both the orphanages in Ecuador. I saw God in them when they smiled, when they laughed, and when they played with each other, or with my family and I. I thought it was amazing how welcoming and happy they were. For example, the day we arrived in Quito, Jen gave us a tour of the orphanage. As we walked past the bedrooms, one of the children grabbed my hand. I had never seen him before, and I didn't even know his name. He grabbed my hand and pulled me over to the rug. I sat down, and he handed me a book and plopped down on my lap. I especially saw God's loving heart and welcoming personality in that boy. I will never forget my trip to Ecuador, and all the love and happiness I saw in those kids." - Elizabeth Berger
"My experience of this trip to Ecuador was wonderful and eye-opening. I felt that I had a connection to god on this trip because of all of the feelings and experiences I had. For example, when we first arrived in Latacunga, we were all very nervous to jump in with the kids. All of the kids brought us to the trampoline and we bounced for hours. Many people from our group didn't know any spanish and all of the kids didn't speak english but we still had a great time. I remember reflecting on that experience and feeling like god had told these children to be open-hearted and wonderful because they were truly some of the most loving and joyous children I had ever met even though they were left by their parents. It was clear to see that these kids were truly the embodiment and soul of god's children." -Charlie Berger, 15
Prayer: Holy God, Open our hearts and minds so that we may receive you and become aware of your presence in our midst. Amen.
