Gratitude and Thanksgiving

Reflection by Julie Thistlethwaite

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.  It turns what we have into enough, and more.” Melody Beattie

In this season of gratitude and thanksgiving, I am always reminded of one particular Thanksgiving with my family when I was growing up. The day before the holiday, my father met a homeless couple – I don’t know where or how- and he invited them for Thanksgiving dinner.  I recall that my mother was a bit shocked.  They were absolute strangers to us and I got the distinct impression that my father had not spent more than a minute or so with them before issuing the invitation.  I remember thinking that this was not what I had in mind for a family Thanksgiving dinner.  My mother told me to make the best of it and so, I reluctantly tried to do that.  I don’t remember anything about the meal, although I know it was turkey with all of the trimmings.  What I remember so vividly was that this couple added so much to our table; they contributed to the conversation and we were so much richer because of my father’s impulsive gesture.  I remember feeling a special glow when my father left to drive them “home”.  Our house felt more “filled”, it felt different to me.  I looked at my parents in a new way.

Prayer: Loving Father, Fill us with gratitude.  Help us to realize that when we share what we have, it becomes more.  Amen
