Love Sweet Love

Reflection by Michaela McDonald

Beloved, Let us love one another for love is of God.

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some but for everyone

Just the other day, one of our younger Children’s Church children came up to me after a prayer service and gave me a bracelet that she had made for me. It was very sweet and charming and I put it right on and said thank you but I came close to moving on and missing the true gift, a blessing of joy, kindness and love.  There is a reason that Jesus mentions children and the Kingdom of heaven in the same breath. The kingdom of heaven is wide, vast and all-encompassing and can be summed up in a word - love.  Children show us the way; they freely give love and they freely receive love.

Our New Testament commandment is that we love God with all our heart and that we love our neighbor as ourselves.

We are called to be agents of love to the world around us.  We are blessed to be recipients of love. We look to God for love given to us in peace, in hope, in healing, in grace.  Let’s also look to the people whose lives bump into ours - and find the love.  It’s there.  It’s an amazing treasure to find.

Love given or received changes us. It softens our edges.  It can quiet the roar of the world around us and allow us to be in the moment.

I hope you see me wearing my new bracelet - it’s Halloween colors and made of wax sticks twisted together and more precious than silver or gold.

Prayer: Today, may I be a vessel of love for this world.  May my eyes of compassion and words of kindness be a ray of hope for those whose paths intersect with mine today.
